⚔️ Last Samurai Standing (イクサガミ) — Review (No Spoilers)

292 warriors. One wooden tag each. One survivor walks away with a fortune. Netflix's Last Samurai Standing throws a disgraced ex-samurai into a merciless 1878 death game stretching from Kyoto to Tokyo, and the internet has already crowned it "Shōgun meets Squid Game." Starring Junichi Okada, the series backs up the hype with brutal swordplay, real emotional stakes, and a premise that's brilliantly simple: steal tags, stay alive, reach Tokyo.

👥 Cast & Characters

Junichi Okada as Shujiro Saga
A former undefeated samurai stripped of his status in the early Meiji era, forced back into violence to save his sick family and his village.
Yumia Fujisaki
One of the standout fighters caught in the same deadly tournament, whose path repeatedly crosses Shujiro's as alliances form and collapse.
Kaya Kiyohara
A key presence tied to Shujiro's past, adding an emotional throughline to a story built on betrayal and survival.
Masahiro Higashide
Another formidable competitor in the tournament, part of the deep bench of warriors that makes the battle royale feel genuinely unpredictable.

📖 Story (Spoiler-Free)

In the early Meiji era, 1878, Shujiro Saga was once known as an unbeatable samurai. Now stripped of status in a Japan racing toward modernization, he's pulled into a nightmare: 292 warriors gather under cover of night at Kyoto's Tenryu-ji Temple, each handed a single wooden tag and one brutal rule — steal your rivals' tags, survive, and reach Tokyo to claim a massive cash prize. Shujiro doesn't join for the money for its own sake; his sick family and his village's survival depend on it. As the game begins, alliances form and shatter in an instant, and every warrior on that road becomes both hunter and target.

⭐ Our Rating

4.4 / 5
A tightly paced, emotionally grounded survival thriller that earns its "Shōgun meets Squid Game" comparison instead of just chasing the label.

💬 Personal Take

My honest opinion: What surprised me most about Last Samurai Standing is how little it wastes. Six episodes is a tight runway for 292 characters and a game this brutal, yet it never feels rushed — every death lands, every alliance has a reason to exist, and the tag-stealing mechanic keeps tension high without ever feeling gimmicky. Junichi Okada carries the show with a quiet, weathered intensity that makes Shujiro's motivation — saving people, not winning a prize — genuinely land. The action is clean and brutal without tipping into gratuitous, and the Meiji-era setting gives it a visual identity that separates it from every other battle-royale story out there. If I have one complaint, it's that six episodes leaves you wanting more immediately, which honestly says more about how well it works than anything else. Easily one of the strongest international originals Netflix put out in 2025.

✅ Positives

  • Junichi Okada's performance: a quietly powerful lead that grounds the entire death game in real stakes.
  • Tight, efficient pacing: six episodes with almost no filler, built for one of the easiest binge-watches of the year.
  • Genuinely brutal action: sword fights feel weighty and dangerous rather than choreographed for show.
  • Strong period setting: the Meiji-era backdrop gives the survival-game genre a fresh, distinct identity.

❌ Negatives

  • Short season: with 292 characters in play, some fighters get barely any screen time before they're gone.
  • Fast character turnover: the sheer scale of the tournament means a few emotional beats move faster than they probably should.
  • Leaves you wanting more: six episodes wraps up quickly, and the wait for Season 2 stings.
