🏚️ The Last House — Review (No Spoilers)

An ordinary morning. A locked door that won't open. A family with nowhere left to go. Director Louis Leterrier's The Last House traps a family of four inside their own home with an unexplainable, inescapable force sealing every exit. Starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, the film promises a claustrophobic survival nightmare — but critics have been split on whether the execution lives up to the premise.

📖 Story (Spoiler-Free)

After an ordinary day turns into an unimaginable nightmare, a family of four wakes up to find every door and window in their home impossible to open. What should be their safe haven quickly becomes a prison, as supplies dwindle and an unseen force outside refuses to let them leave. A day becomes a week, then years — and as fear, desperation, and suspicion threaten to tear the family apart, they must work together to uncover the truth behind what's keeping them trapped before it's too late.

⭐ Our Rating

2.5 / 5
A genuinely unsettling premise that never quite figures out what to do with itself once the family is locked inside.

💬 Personal Take

My honest opinion: The setup here is one of the most interesting horror premises of the year — an entire family aging inside a house that simply refuses to let them leave is genuinely unsettling to sit with. But the film spends its first half stuck in a low gear, and by the time it finally finds real tension in the back stretch, it rushes toward an ending that feels more like a setup for a sequel than a resolution to the story it built. Greta Lee and Wagner Moura are doing everything they can with the material, and their performances are the main reason to stick with it. If Leterrier had trusted the premise a little more instead of hedging his bets, this could have been something special.

✅ Positives

  • Strong premise: a family trapped inside their own home for years is a genuinely unsettling hook.
  • Greta Lee & Wagner Moura: both actors sell the psychological toll of long-term imprisonment convincingly.
  • Stronger back half: the final act finally delivers the tension the setup promises.

❌ Negatives

  • Slow, toneless first half: the opening hour struggles to build momentum from an otherwise strong concept.
  • Rushed ending: the film prioritizes sequel-baiting over giving its own story a satisfying resolution.
  • Mixed critical reception: currently sitting at a low score on Rotten Tomatoes, with several critics calling out weak execution.
