Twenty years of lore, one single day, and the two soldiers who survived it. This is how it all began.
Gears of War: E-Day is the prequel fans have asked for since 2006: the day the Locust Horde first erupted from beneath the planet Sera and tore the city of Kalona apart. Developed by The Coalition on Unreal Engine 5, it puts you back in the boots of a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, long before they became the hardened legends of the original trilogy. In this full review, we break down the story, the characters, the combat, the technical details, the pros and cons, and whether it is worth your time and money.
🎯 Quick Verdict: A brutal, emotional, beautifully crafted return to form. The horror-tinged opening hours, the bond between Marcus and Dom, and the redesigned combat make this one of the strongest Gears games ever made, even if the campaign runs a little long in its back half.

📖 Story (Spoiler-Free)
Set on the planet Sera, fourteen years before the original Gears of War and shortly after the end of the brutal Pendulum Wars, E-Day opens on a quiet night in the city of Kalona. Marcus Fenix and Dominic "Dom" Santiago, two war-weary veterans trying to picture a life after combat, are drinking in a bar with two new faces: Mags Carter, an ex-soldier who now works at Kalona's Imulsion refinery, and Lucas Reyes, a young communications officer who has never seen real combat.
Then the ground opens. The Locust Horde erupts from beneath the city in a coordinated, terrifying surprise attack, and nobody, soldier or civilian, is ready for it. What follows is the single worst day in the history of Sera, told through the eyes of the four strangers who become Bravo Squad. At the emotional center of it all is the strained friendship between Marcus and Dom, who are still grieving the recent death of Dom's older brother Carlos. E-Day is not just an invasion story, it is the story of how that friendship became the bond the entire original trilogy is built on.
🧑🤝🧑 Main Characters
Marcus Fenix — A young veteran of the Pendulum Wars trying to imagine life outside the military, voiced again by John DiMaggio, with a fully rebuilt character model and facial animation system.
Dominic "Dom" Santiago — Marcus's closest friend, worried about his wife Maria and their children as the invasion spreads, and grieving the loss of his brother Carlos. Voiced again by Carlos Ferro.
Mags Carter — A former soldier and refinery worker who knows Kalona inside and out, and refuses to sit back while her city burns.
Lucas Reyes — A young communications officer with no frontline experience, thrown straight into the most violent day the planet has ever seen.
🎮 Gameplay
E-Day brings the biggest control overhaul the series has had since Gears of War 3. Cover is now mapped to a single dedicated button, sprinting is a stick-click, and vaulting plus a brand-new jump are both tied to the same face button, giving Bravo Squad far more vertical mobility than any previous Gears campaign. Combat still revolves around the iconic Lancer chainsaw bayonet and cover-based gunplay, but the new movement options make firefights feel noticeably faster and more aggressive.
The campaign supports full four-player online co-op, letting you play as all four members of Bravo Squad. Outside the story, Horde Siege scales the classic Horde mode up to 12 players, and Versus has been rebuilt from the ground up for 4v4 matches. The opening hours lean hard into dread and horror, something the series has never fully done before, as Marcus and the squad realize just how outmatched they are against an enemy nobody has ever seen. The only real drawback is pacing: the campaign's second half stretches on longer than it needs to, and a few mid-game chapters repeat ideas from earlier missions.
🎨 Visuals & Sound
Built on Unreal Engine 5 and targeting 60 FPS, E-Day is easily the best-looking Gears game to date, with upgraded strand-based hair rendering, a lived-in late-1970s-inspired aesthetic for Kalona, and some of the most visceral enemy and gore effects the franchise has ever shipped. The sound design leans into dread just as much as spectacle: distant screams, groaning Imulsion-stained earth, and a haunting rendition of Tears for Fears' "Mad World" tying the game back to the very first Gears of War trailer from 2006.

• Four-player campaign co-op
• 12-player Horde Siege and rebuilt Versus
• Returning original voice cast

🤔 Who Should Play Gears of War: E-Day?
Essential for longtime Gears fans who have wanted to see Emergence Day since 2006, and a strong entry point for newcomers who love cover-based shooters with a heavy emotional core, like The Last of Us or Resident Evil-style dread mixed with military action. If you want a tighter, shorter campaign, the back half may test your patience. The game is extremely violent and gory, so it is intended strictly for mature players.
🏁 Final Verdict: 8.9 / 10
Gears of War: E-Day is the prequel the series has been building toward for two decades, and it delivers on nearly every front: story, atmosphere, combat and spectacle. A slightly bloated back half keeps it from a perfect score, but this is, without question, one of the best Gears games ever made.
