📌 The Story at a Glance

Modern Warfare III (2023): the hunt. Task Force 141 chases Makarov across Europe while a betrayal inside their own chain of command costs them dearly.
Modern Warfare 4 (2026): the reckoning. Price goes outlaw to finish what he started, while a brand new squad fights for survival as war erupts in Korea.

The big question behind both games is simple: how far will a good soldier go for justice? MW3 breaks Price. MW4 shows what he becomes.

🔙 Modern Warfare III (2023): The Story You Need First

The Setup

MW3 continues straight from Modern Warfare II. Task Force 141, led by Captain Price with Soap, Ghost and Gaz, is dealing with the fallout of General Shepherd's betrayal. The new threat is Vladimir Makarov, the ultranationalist mastermind who escapes custody and shifts his focus to Western Europe, with a plan that includes destroying the Channel Tunnel between the UK and France.

The Betrayal

The most painful twist is that General Shepherd is tied to Makarov's rise. Price and the team find him in Siberia alongside Makarov's men, and they later learn how deep the damage goes. Price still forces Shepherd to help clear a false accusation and talk to a congressional subcommittee, but nobody on the team trusts him. The man who should have protected them is the man who helped the enemy.

The Ending That Changes Everything

In the final mission, Price and Soap race through a London train station to defuse bombs, and Makarov ambushes them. Soap is killed while giving Price the chance to survive. Makarov escapes. The team scatters Soap's ashes, and in the post-credits scene Price confronts Shepherd in his office and shoots him. That single moment turns Price from a captain into a man with nothing left to lose, and it is exactly where MW4 begins.

🔥 Modern Warfare 4 (2026): Warfare Without Limits

The Setup

The campaign runs on two tracks at the same time. On one side, North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of South Korea, starting with the fictional Hajin City. On the other, Price is an operator-turned-outlaw, on the run from the people hunting him and hunting the one pulling the strings. The story moves across sixteen missions in Korea, Paris, New York and Mumbai.

Track 1: Private Park and the Korean Front

You play as Private Park Hyun Jun, a young South Korean soldier who expected a quiet end to his military service. A routine patrol turns into a fight for survival as his squad is pushed through collapsing cities, trenches and brutal counteroffensives, alongside U.S. and ROK Marine forces. These missions focus on fear, chaos and being a small part of a huge war, which gives the game a very different feel from the usual elite-operator fantasy.

Track 2: Price Crosses the Line

Price's story is a globe-trotting manhunt. His trail leads through New York, Paris and Mumbai, and early reports describe it as the part of the campaign that ties the older loose ends together. He is no longer protected by the system he served, and the story asks how many lines a legend can cross before he becomes the thing he fought.

Why It Matters

MW4 is framed as the end of the rebooted Modern Warfare saga. The Korean conflict becomes the spark for a much bigger war, and the game also sets up the DMZ extraction mode, which takes place after the campaign in the Hajin exclusion zone.

👥 Main Characters

Captain John Price

The face of the series. In MW3 he loses a brother-in-arms. In MW4 he is a wanted man driven by revenge, working outside the rules.

Private Park Hyun Jun

The new protagonist. A young soldier facing real combat for the first time, which makes him the emotional anchor of the Korean half of the story.

Soap, Ghost and Gaz

The Task Force 141 family. Soap's death in MW3 is the wound that drives everything that follows.

Makarov and Shepherd

The enemy outside and the enemy inside. Makarov is the mastermind who escapes, and Shepherd is the betrayer Price finally shoots at the end of MW3.

🧠 The Big Themes

1. Grief becomes a weapon: Soap's death is the engine of Price's whole arc.
2. Justice vs revenge: MW4 keeps asking where one ends and the other begins.
3. Ordinary soldiers in an extraordinary war: Park's squad shows the human cost behind the headlines.
4. One conflict becomes many: the Korean invasion is a spark, not the whole fire.

💡 How to Catch Up Before You Play

1. Modern Warfare (2019)
2. Modern Warfare II (2022)
3. Modern Warfare III (2023)
4. Modern Warfare 4 (2026)

🏁 My Take

The smartest thing MW4 does is give the franchise two different kinds of tension: the loud, terrified chaos of a young squad under invasion, and the cold, personal hunt of a veteran who has nothing left to lose. MW3 gave Price a reason. MW4 gives him the road, and the contrast between the two stories is what keeps it interesting.

Best for: Call of Duty story fans, Captain Price followers and anyone who wants a fast, cinematic campaign.
Not ideal for: players who only care about multiplayer or who dislike war themes.
