Before you even take off, you can walk around a living air base, chat with pilots from around the world and pick your next sortie. That is the first thing Ace Combat 8 does differently, and it is only the start.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve launched on October 2, 2026, and the online side of the game is already getting people talking. The clip in the screenshot shows the Ace Combat Online lobby: avatars gathered on the airfield, with Missions, Practice, Chat and Screenshot prompts on screen. As a lifelong gamer and video game blogger, I'm breaking down what the online mode is, how the game plays, my preliminary rating, and where to buy it from official stores only.
🎯 Quick Verdict: On paper, this is the most ambitious Ace Combat yet: a cinematic campaign, 30+ aircraft and the series' biggest online mode. My score below is preliminary, based on official material. I will update it after a full playthrough.

📖 The Story: Carrying a Name You Didn't Earn
The FCU has fallen to a Sotoan invasion. You start adrift at sea until the aging carrier Endurance pulls you aboard, and there you are given the call sign "Wings of Theve", a legendary ace and a symbol of hope for the capital. Now you have to live up to that name, flying alongside three new squadmates, Baxter, Tasha and Coster, known as Joker Flight. The goal is to reclaim your homeland.
🛩️ How to Play: Beginner Tips
These are general tips for the series' arcade style, so expect small differences in the final game's controls:
• Learn the radar and lock-on first. Most dogfights are won by positioning, not by fast reflexes.
• Match your aircraft to the mission. Air-to-air fighters and ground-attack jets feel very different, so check the loadout before each sortie.
• Use clouds and terrain. Series veterans know that cover can break an enemy lock.
• Spend time in Practice. The online lobby has a training mode to learn the basics without pressure.
• Don't chase kills in a team mode. Support your squad and pick objectives that score for the team.
🌐 Ace Combat Online: What We Know
Ace Combat Online is a separate endgame mode with its own progression and save data, so your campaign progress and your online progress do not mix. You play as a mercenary pilot and raise your rank through missions.
Co-Op Assault (PvE): two teams of four compete for the highest score against enemy forces.
Co-Op Warfare (PvPvE): two teams of four fight each other while allied and enemy land, sea and air NPC units join the battle.
Limited-time missions: special sorties such as Scramble and Emergency Sortie appear for a limited time, and some may have role or cost restrictions.
The Air Base lobby: reported to host up to 100 players, with training, a store for aircraft and cosmetics, and avatar customization. This is exactly what the screenshot above shows.
Ace Pass: online play counts toward Ace Pass progress to unlock items.
💭 My Opinion
What excites me most is that Ace Combat finally treats multiplayer as a real destination instead of an afterthought. Co-op was missed in Ace Combat 7, and a social air base is a smart way to make online feel like part of the world. The risk is the usual one for live-service-style modes: balance, matchmaking quality and how aggressive the store and Ace Pass feel in practice. I want to see that before giving a final score.
✅ Pros & ❌ Cons (Preliminary)
Pros
• Cinematic campaign with first-person scenes
• 30+ aircraft and four combat roles
• Biggest online mode in the series
• Co-op is back
• Big visual jump on Unreal Engine 5
Cons / Watch-outs
• Online progression is separate from the campaign
• Store and Ace Pass need a close look
• Final balance is unproven
• Standard price is $69.99
🏁 Final Verdict (So Far): A Strong Takeoff
Ace Combat 8 looks like the series' most complete package: story, spectacle and a serious online mode. A full review will follow once I have logged enough hours in both the campaign and Ace Combat Online.
