Onimusha: Way of the Sword — Story, Combat & the Newest Trailer

"For those born as samurai..." Twenty years after the series went quiet, Capcom is bringing Onimusha back with a brand-new hero, a darker take on feudal Japan, and a launch date that just got moved up. Here's the story, the combat system, and the latest official trailer.

📋 Quick Facts

Developer / Publisher: Capcom  |  Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows)
Release Date: September 4, 2026 (moved up from a planned September 25 launch)  |  Genre: Swordplay Action  |  Mode: Single-player
Protagonist: Miyamoto Musashi  |  Setting: Early Edo-period Kyoto

📖 Story

Onimusha: Way of the Sword drops the series' long-running Samanosuke/Jubei lineage and instead casts the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi as its lead, reimagined as a young ronin caught up in a demonic invasion of early Edo-period Kyoto. As Japan's warring states settle into an uneasy peace, an eruption of supernatural Genma forces tears through the capital, and Musashi is pulled into the fight to stop them.

True to the series' roots, Musashi wields the mystical Oni gauntlet alongside his blade, drawing on demon-slaying power passed down through Onimusha lore to face off against the Genma and the darker forces pulling their strings from the shadows of the city.

🎮 Combat & Gameplay

Way of the Sword is built as a third-person swordplay action game rather than the survival-horror-leaning entries of the early series. Capcom has emphasized precise, punishing sword duels, parry-and-counter timing, and the classic Onimusha "soul absorption" mechanic, where defeated Genma release essence that Musashi can harvest to power up his gauntlet and abilities. A free demo has been available since earlier in 2026 and reportedly crossed a million downloads, which Capcom cited as one reason for moving the release date forward.

🗓️ Release Date & Editions

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches September 4, 2026, simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Capcom originally scheduled the game for September 25 but pulled the date forward by three weeks in response to demo feedback, converting the digital pre-order bonus into an Early Purchase Bonus available for a limited window after launch instead.

Standard and Premium Deluxe editions are available, priced at $69.99 and $89.99 respectively. Note that Switch 2 pre-orders placed before the date change were automatically cancelled and need to be re-placed on the Nintendo eShop.

🎬 Latest Trailer — "The Challenges That Await"

Capcom's sixth and newest trailer introduces the Genma siblings, a pair of boss-tier antagonists standing between Musashi and the truth behind Kyoto's demonic invasion — the clearest look yet at the game's late-game challenge ahead of its September 4 launch.
