A beta build. A cut ending. A final scene that may have been far crueler.
A huge Steam data leak has surfaced an April 2010 beta of Mafia II, and inside it players found what looks like a rejected, much darker ending for Vito Scaletta. Below you will find what the footage shows, who found it, why it should be treated carefully, and the official trailer and store links for the remastered game.

🗂️ What Was Leaked
Around the end of August 2026, a massive archive of old Steam data was made public. It is reported at about 12 TB, covering games from roughly 2003 to 2013, with builds, betas, tools and assets. Among them is a Mafia II beta from April 2010, about four months before the game launched in August 2010.
Inside that beta, data hunters found a finale that differs from the released game. A Czech blogger and modder called Sliderv2 published a clip of it, about a minute and a half long, and the story spread quickly across gaming media.

🎬 The Cut Ending Explained
The beginning matches the final game: Vito and Joe Barbaro leave in different cars, with Leo Galante implying that the deal protected Vito but not Joe. Then the scenes diverge. In the beta, Vito appears to realise what is happening and reaches for a weapon. The camera pulls away from the car and three gunshots are heard.
Players read this as Vito firing twice and being killed by the third shot, which would make it a much bleaker ending. Notice that his death is implied, not shown. Some outlets also report that cut script lines suggested Joe was being sent to someone who would kill him, which would make Leo's action look like a twisted mercy. That reading is not confirmed either.
🎯 The Ending in the Final Game
In the released version, Vito gets into a car with Leo and Joe is driven away separately, leaving his fate open. Vito survives, and he later returns in Mafia III, where the story also makes it clear that Joe lived. That continuity is exactly why the leaked version matters: if Vito had died, his role in the later game would not have been possible.
🎭 Key Names and Roles
🔎 How Reliable Is It?
What looks solid: multiple outlets report the footage comes from a genuine April 2010 beta inside the leaked archive, and they agree on what the clip shows.
What is uncertain: what the scene means. The death of Vito is an interpretation of off-screen gunshots. There is no official comment we could find from 2K or the developers confirming the intent, and details such as the exact script lines come from secondary reports. A beta build is also not a finished story: it shows an idea that was later rejected, not what the creators wanted to be canon.
🤔 Why It May Have Been Cut
Reports suggest two reasons. One is continuity, since a dead Vito would have blocked his return in Mafia III. The other is tone: some players argue the death being only implied felt weak, and that the released ending is more haunting because it leaves the question open. These are opinions and theories, not statements from the studio.

🧠 Our Verdict: 7.0/10 Confidence
The footage appears genuine, and it is a rare look at a road not taken, which is why it matters to fans. Still, a cut scene from a beta is only one draft of a story. The safest conclusion is that Mafia II was once heading toward an even more tragic finish, while the version people played, with a surviving Vito and an open question about Joe, remains the only official one.
This is our personal confidence rating for the leak, not a review of the game.

💬 Your Questions, Answered
Does Vito die in Mafia 2?
Not in the released game. The leaked beta ending suggests he was originally meant to die, but that version was dropped.
Is the leaked ending real?
The beta build appears real according to multiple reports, but what the scene means is unconfirmed.
What happens to Joe?
In the final game he is driven away separately and his fate is left open, and later material confirms he survived.
Was Mafia 2 meant to have several endings?
Reportedly yes, up to four, according to the original lead developer.
Does this change Mafia III?
It would have, since Vito appears there. That is one reason the dark ending may have been cut.
Where can I play it?
On Steam, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as Mafia II: Definitive Edition.
Final call: a fascinating glimpse of a darker Mafia II, but remember it is a leak and could be wrong. Which ending do you prefer, the sad one we got or the brutal one that was cut? Tell us in the comments.
