The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past: Everything Confirmed So Far

Geralt of Rivia is going back on the Path one more time. CD PROJEKT RED used gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 to confirm two huge pieces of news at once: a free "Remastered" overhaul of The Witcher 3, and a brand-new full-scale expansion called Songs of the Past. Here's everything confirmed, plus every official trailer released so far.

📋 Quick Facts

Developer: CD PROJEKT RED, in collaboration with Fool's Theory  |  Announced at: gamescom Opening Night Live 2026
Remastered release date: September 29, 2026  |  Songs of the Past release: 2027 (exact date TBA)
Remastered platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Battle.net  |  Songs of the Past platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2
Not supported: PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (Songs of the Past is current-gen only)

🧩 What's Actually Happening?

Two separate but connected releases were confirmed on the same night. The first is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, a free upgrade for everyone who already owns the base game, arriving September 29, 2026. The second is Songs of the Past, a brand-new paid, full-fledged third expansion — the game's first new story content in roughly a decade — launching in 2027.

As a surprise bonus announced the same day, every current owner of The Witcher 3 instantly received free access to the game's original two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, at no extra cost.

🛠️ The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered

More than 11 years after the original 2015 launch, CD PROJEKT RED is giving The Witcher 3 a substantial technical overhaul. The update is free for existing owners on qualifying platforms and includes:

• Updated visuals — new textures, lighting, and foliage shading
• Enhanced combat and improved traversal/movement
• New Witcher Sign visual effects and revamped mount (horse) handling
• Improved monster behaviors and a reworked skill tree
• Transmogrification, new finishing moves, and an expanded photo mode

For the first time, the game is also coming natively to Nintendo Switch 2, and — through a new partnership with Blizzard Entertainment — to Battle.net, both on the same September 29 release date.

🎶 Songs of the Past: The New Expansion

Songs of the Past puts players back in control of Geralt of Rivia one final time before the spotlight shifts to Ciri in the upcoming Witcher 4. It's being developed in collaboration with Polish studio Fool's Theory and is described as a full-fledged third expansion rather than a small add-on.

The story takes Geralt to a brand-new region called Letten — an outwardly idyllic land of rural tradition, bountiful harvests, and lavish festivals that hides a dark secret beneath the surface. A new weapon type, a chain, has also been confirmed for combat.

Because it's built on the upgraded Remastered foundation, Songs of the Past will only run on current-gen hardware — it will not be released for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, and it carries higher PC system requirements than the base game.

🗓️ Rollout Timeline

August 25–26, 2026: Remastered and Songs of the Past both revealed at gamescom Opening Night Live; free legacy expansions unlocked for all current owners.
September 29, 2026: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered launches on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and Battle.net.
2027: Songs of the Past launches as a paid expansion; exact date not yet announced.

🎬 Trailer #1 — Official "Songs of the Past" Reveal Trailer

This is the world-premiere cinematic trailer for the expansion, shown during gamescom Opening Night Live. It shows Geralt returning to the Path and introduces the region of Letten, leaning on the franchise's usual mix of quiet, personal moments and larger folklore-driven mystery rather than heavy combat footage. No exact 2027 release date is given — it's positioned purely as a first look.

🎬 Trailer #2 — Official "Wild Hunt Remastered" Reveal Trailer

This was the surprise announcement that opened the door for Songs of the Past — CD PROJEKT RED revealing the Remastered edition first. The trailer runs through the visual and gameplay upgrades side by side with old footage: reworked lighting and textures, smoother combat animations, revamped horse riding, and new monster behaviors, closing with the confirmed September 29, 2026 release date.

Note: Both embedded videos are CD PROJEKT RED's official gamescom 2026 trailers, checked to confirm they play correctly as of this update. Songs of the Past does not yet have a confirmed 2027 release date, and its full content list may still change before launch.
