š In‑Depth Review
Revelations (2025) is a dark, psychological mystery-thriller from director Yeon Sang‑ho. The story follows Pastor Sung Min‑chan (Ryu Jun‑yeol), who is deeply convinced that he receives divine messages. After a missing persons case intersects with his faith, he becomes obsessed with the idea of punishing sin through “revelation.” Alongside him is Detective Lee Yeon‑hui (Shin Hyun‑been), haunted by visions of her dead sister, who is pulled into the pastor’s mission. Their paths converge when they confront Kwon Yang‑rae (Shin Min‑jae), a man with a criminal past, and are forced to explore faith, morality, and guilt.
The film builds tension masterfully, using slow-but-purposeful pacing to let dread settle in. Yeon does not shy away from the uncomfortable: the supernatural is ambiguous, the faith is questioned, and the morality is messy. Ryu delivers a deeply conflicted performance — calm yet disturbed — while Shin Hyun‑been brings vulnerability and strength to her role. Visually, the film is haunting, and the sound design elevates the sense of otherworldliness.
That said, some narrative threads feel overly dense. The film juggles theological reflection with crime and horror, and sometimes the balance tilts into expository monologue. But when it works, it works — and the final act will leave you pondering whether what you saw was divine or delusion.
